About Curt’s piece:
I was lucky to be painting last November on the South Rim of Grand Canyon following a cold weather storm. I say lucky because I witnessed a rare occurrence, seeing fractus clouds clustering around and clinging well below the tops of the temples to the north. The dark and shadowed North Rim of Grand Canyon gives a strong contrast with the full light on Cheops Temple. The warm earth of the great chasm and the cold moisture from rain has created fog, rising from the lower reaches of Pipe Springs, below where I painted from Grandeur Point. There is a great monolith protecting the lower trail, mostly known to hikers, that here is barely seen. It stands guard next to the rising haze of the fog. As I painted, I was reminded of the Ancient Greek myth of Pythia, the oracle of Delphi who used the earth’s own vapors to predict future events.
