Professionally trained as an artist, with study in Europe, David Wright has spent his life painting subjects he is most passionate about…landscapes and historical subjects: the American frontier, (hunters, soldiers, and American Indians), and the American Civil War. His work has been featured in television documentaries and as covers for numerous books and magazines. As an avid historian, his research has led him to write articles for various publications, as well as contributing chapters in some well-known books on the American frontier. The retrospective will feature highlights from his storied career.

The exhibition marks the 110th anniversary of Houser’s birth and the 100th of Jackson’s. Curated by Booth Museum Executive Director Seth Hopkins, the exhibition delves into the captivating histories and artistic parallels of Houser and Jackson. In researching the exhibition, Hopkins came to believe Houser and Jackson are the two most important Western sculptors since Frederic Remington. Despite very different backgrounds, artistic training and philosophies these two titans of art traveled parallel paths to the top of the Western art scene and beyond. Carefully selected works, ranging from well-known to rarely seen, will illustrate how both men broke barriers, influenced many younger artists and brought new collectors to Western and Indigenous art.

This exhibition features 30 Georgia artists who competed in a 5-day event held in Savannah back in October. Some of the best works created during that event will make up the exhibit. The director of the show and two of the top award-winning artists will be our guests for Art for Lunch and an informal opening for the show on January 8.

The Booth Museum began collecting photographs in the early 2000s, but the permanent collection and gallery were not formally established until 2017. Today, the museum has over 900 photographs, dating from the nineteenth century to the present. This retrospective will survey the Booth’s photography collecting activity and includes an eclectic array of historical and contemporary imagery by over forty photographers. The art ranges from antique images to contemporary mural-sized panoramas. Together, these images vividly depict the essence of the American West.
