3-Day Painting Workshop with Artist Crystal Despain / “Tell Me a Story: Composing for Impact and Intimacy”
Wednesday, September 2 – Friday, September 4, 2026
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Every great painting does more than depict, it speaks. It has the power to draw a viewer from across the room, then reward their attention with richness and detail up close. That ability isn’t accidental; it’s the result of deliberate design. In this workshop, we’ll bridge the technical with the poetic, exploring how compositional strategies can spark both emotional resonance and biological response. You’ll learn how to use these tools not only to capture attention, but also to guide the eye and stir the imagination. At the heart of our work together is developing a personal process. A reliable process is more than a routine–it’s a framework that builds confidence, nurtures consistency, and allows your unique voice and style to emerge with depth and clarity. By weaving together compositional strategy and personal practice, you’ll gain the tools to create paintings that engage at every level: powerful from a distance, compelling up close, and unmistakably your own. This workshop is oil focused but students are welcome to use other medium. This workshop is intended for the serious student with at least a basic handle on their medium through working professionals. An ipad is not required but the instructor will be referencing digital composition using procreate (ipad only).
