3-Day Workshop with Artist Ann Larsen / “Dynamic Paintings from Photographs”
Wednesday, March 24 – Friday, March 26, 2027
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Painting from life is the all-important step to successful paintings. However, there are times when we just can’t do that. So, the use of photographs becomes an important tool just like brushes and paint. They have their place but can be a crutch as well. The workshop will focus on using photographs to design and create paintings. Discussion will center on how to take the best photographs to work with and how light, color and perspective in a photo fools us. We will leave the studio to take photos, sketch and then return to work with them. Ann will lead you through using photos as the first step in the creation of your paintings. This then leads to the steps of compositional design, shape, value and color and paint application. Details are left until the very last ten percent of the painting. Ann will work with each student to help them get the most dynamic composition before they place any paint on their canvas. Emphasis will be on designing from your photos and field sketches. Demos, lectures and the work of historical and contemporary artists will be shown and discussed. Note: You will need a phone or tablet to take photos. Beginners are welcome but having some painting experience will be helpful.
