This tool can be observed in nature and portrayed in paint to evoke emotion and rhythms in the painting. The class will do three paintings over the four days: two head studies and a two-day pose that covers advanced techniques for capturing a likeness, painting hands, and placing the sitter in an environment. Michelle will also do a slideshow of her work, including step-by-step photographs of her more elaborate finished studio work, while discussing things to keep in mind when taking a study back into the studio to make a completed work for the gallery. 3-Day Watercolor Workshop with Artist Cindy Baron / “Innovative Methods to Bring Richness and Life to Your Landscapes”
A different, unique approach to creating watercolor paintings that sing. I will show you how mixing layers of paint with a limited palette will hold their vibrancy, harmonize, and create an atmosphere that is exciting and complimentary to nature. My watercolors are filled with richness and depth applied only by applications of washes of color that are transparent and opaque. As a watercolorist and oil painter, I am able to apply techniques from both to give my paintings a unique feel. You will learn a different approach to mixing, throwing color on paper, and letting them mix to appear more natural to nature. Step-by-step I will show you how my palette of colors, techniques and lifting of pigment will develop into a painting with harmony and atmosphere. I have a very unusual approach. I will share all my tools, materials, and knowledge. I will introduce gouache and show you how to bring an exciting, spontaneous life to your paintings. With this class you will be given an insight into the capability of what watercolor paintings can achieve. We will learn the importance of studies to help problem solve a composition, the importance of subtle value changes to harmonize a painting, and glazing techniques that unite a painting.

3-Day Oil/Acrylic Workshop with Artist Patrick Lee / “How I Paint – A Process for Creative Flow and Authentic Style”
Get to the heart of your authentic work and your personal style by 1) making a lot of work (quantity over quality). This quiets the internal critic and gives our unique ideas a chance to breathe. 2) Having a deadline. This is the best antidote to procrastination and “waiting for inspiration”. 3) Focusing on process over product. See the first two points! Topics will include contour line drawing and memory, value and its’ use in design and pattern, use of the Notan in design and creative thought (improvisation), solid drawing and values as a basis for “looseness”, keeping things simple, subjective color, breakdown and building back up of the image. I’ll do a demo of a painting for the first half of each day with the students painting the second half of the day. Attendees may use oils or acrylics. ***Students should bring their own photos to work from.

Additionally, students will also learn how to work around the limitations of photography and create landscape paintings that appear naturalistic. This is an important skill landscape painters must develop when working in the studio. Students will receive individual attention as they work so the instructor can help address the specific goals each individual has for their work. Our time will be spent inside and will cover everything from materials to gear. Where to start a painting as well as learning to think about the philosophy that can be involved with picture making and the power of a limited palette. Much of this thought comes from the teaching and thinking of American painter Robert Henri, the influences he had and his ideas of what makes “the art spirit”, so for a jump start you might read his book, The Art Spirit. There’s a lot of fun stuff to discuss about the topic of landscape painting and most of our time will be devoted to the fundamentals, specifically in the areas of drawing, color, composition, and editing. Learning how to develop an idea or theme, and then most importantly, learning how to stick to it.

5-Day Still-Life Workshop with Stephanie Birdsall / “Keeping It Real”
Painting from life is an exciting way to learn! This intense but fun class will focus on how the light changes and how to cope with it: the expression of your brush strokes and how to observe actual color and mix it to achieve another level of painting. Brushstrokes not only define form but lead your eye through your painting. You will learn spatial awareness, developing a sense of depth and recognizing edges and comparing values. It’s an opportunity to understand how light and shadow define form. And all this plays to creating a strong composition. Being physically present with the subject can create a deeper emotional connection, which can be conveyed in your painting. Are you excited about your subject and does it show? It’s an “everything” workshop. Whether you work from photos or love plein air, this will enhance the way you perceive your subjects and bring more depth to your paintings. Subject matter will be still-life and whatever is in-season. Oil painters and pastellists welcome. Only Gamsol in the studio.

4-Day Workshop with John Taft / “Design and Composition in Painting”
How about a focus on COMPOSITION in this landscape painting workshop? We know it is an essential part of painting. In this workshop, composition will be our primary focus throughout. We won’t forget to consider the other essentials like color and drawing, values and edges, but a better understanding of composition brings all the elements together, liberating the artist to more successfully convey their vision with any subject. We’ll begin with the basics and gradually move beyond general formulas. You will receive an overview of dynamic symmetry, removing some of the mystery to this design approach as we look at how it has been applied by artists for centuries (like…what do Van Gogh and Poussin have in common?). The workshop will include daily lessons, on location painting as weather allows, painting demonstrations, and of course, both individual and group critiques. The plan for day four is to develop a little larger work “in studio” from one of our previous days’ paintings.
All levels are welcome, and while I plan to demonstrate in oil, all mediums are welcome as well. If you would like to strengthen your sense of composition for painting any subject, I encourage you to attend!
