Home School Fridays

Join instructor Mersia Martin in exploring a variety of mediums and techniques in these classes for home school students. Students take home a completed art project at the end of each class. Classes meet the first Friday of the month.

4-Week Home School Pottery

All levels of potters are welcome in this pottery class for home school students. Learn the basic ceramic techniques of pinch, coil and slab building and also get plenty of time on the potter's wheel. Attend 3 consecutive Wednesdays then return two weeks later to glaze your work.

The fun begins Wednesday, Sept. 7 and continues on Sept. 14 and 21 with glazing day on Oct. 5.

Hours are 1:00 - 2:30

3-Day Nocturne with Chris Groves

This workshop will consist of lectures and individual critiques. Class will begin with a lecture on techniques with respect to nocturnes, specific palette options and use of techniques in color mixing, color theory, dominate color and saturated color within the nocturne. Demos will follow, using value and temperature to render and paint a nocturne correctly, along with a quick history of artists painting nocturnes. Discussions will take place on how to turn a daytime photography or painting into a nocturne.

Kinstler Demo

World-renowned portrait painter, Everett Raymond Kinstler will lead a painting demonstration as part of the opening ceremonies for his exhibition, Everett Raymond Kinstler: Journeys West and Beyond. Amanda Lovett Plein Air for Studio Painters

Even if you never leave the studio, applying the basic Plein Air techniques will improve your ability to add depth, atmosphere and life to your landscapes. this workshop will cover basic to advanced techniques of painting in Plein Air and how to apply them to your studio work or use them in the field. This informative workshop will consist of instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on painting by each student. Individual instruction will be emphasized!

4-Week Intro to Linocut Printmaking

If you are interested in printmaking but don't know where to start, this is the class for you. Linocut is a relief printing technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum is used as the relief surface. Students will learn how to plan their design, cut their blocks, and produce an edition of prints. No previous printmaking experience is required. Maybe this is the year to create your own Christmas cards!

The fun starts on Tuesday, October 4 and meets each Tuesday for 4 weeks, ending on Oct. 25. Class will begin at 9:00am and end at 4:00pm.

Mahaffey's monumental landscapes reflect his high standards of craftsmanship, exploration, and invention. He has become one of the leading Western artists of our time and continues to lead the way for new generations of artists/explorers who will interpret the western landscape.

4-Week Intro to Mosaics

Geared toward beginners, this class is for those who want to learn the basics of mosaic art. Students will be introduced to the techniques, tools and materials needed to create beautiful art. Design, layout, cutting, adhesives and grouting will all be covered, and students will complete several projects during the class. So, get ready to experiment and join us as we explore all the possibilities of mosaics!

Dylan Pierce Watercolor Basics

This class is perfect for those who have never painted with watercolor or those who want to improve their watercolor skills! We will pack as much as we can into this exciting two day workshop. You'll learn the basics of watercolor such as gradual washes, transparent layering, losing edges, matching wetness, dry into damp, etc. There will be demos and lots of one-on-one instruction. 2-Day Portrait Sculpture Workshop with Kevin Chambers

This 2 day sculpture workshop will focus on classical portraiture. Students will build a life size bust from a live model using water based clay on a provided armature. The class will cover classical techniques and approaches for building a basic portrait and demos for creating each feature. 3 Day Oil Painting Landscape Workshop with Cindy Baron

This workshop is designed to show how to take a tonal painting, build layers of color and harmonize. There will be a demonstration each day to talk about technique, composition and design. Cindy will work with each artist to help achieve a better knowledge of the medium, culminating in a completed painting. Design, values and colors will be discussed along with a critique at the end of the workshop. Photo references will be supplied or you may bring your own. Western American Art History 101

Images of the American frontier have captivated audiences for nearly 200 years with the earliest of these images serving as the foundation for today's Western art. Contemporary Western artists are influenced by those who came before, leading them to either perpetuate traditions, or break the mold and provide unique perspectives on the Western experience. Learn the history of Western art from Catlin and Bodmer, through Remington and Russell, including the art colonies of Taos and Santa Fe, and on through the living masters of today. Class time includes interactive discussions and gallery walks through the Booth Museum.

Suggested textbook: The West of the Imagination, Goetzmann & Goetzmann, available in The Booth Museum Store.

Class will take place on 4 Thursday evenings: February 9th and 23rd; March 2nd and 16th.
