Students will learn about the varying theories regarding the making, use, and meaning of these artistic expressions of slave culture and create their own face jugs with clay. All supplies are included!

Western American Art History 101

Images of the American frontier have captivated audiences for nearly 200 years with the earliest of these images serving as the foundation for today's Western art. Contemporary Western artists are influenced by those who came before, leading them to either perpetuate traditions, or break the mold and provide unique perspectives on the Western experience. Learn the history of Western art from Catlin and Bodmer, through Remington and Russell, including the art colonies of Taos and Santa Fe, and on through the living masters of today. Class time includes interactive discussions and gallery walks through the Booth Museum. Suggested textbook: The West of the Imagination, Goetzmann & Goetzmann, available in the Booth Museum Store.

Seth Hopkins, Executive Director of the Booth Museum, holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from Syracuse University and a Master's degree in Museum Studies from the University of Oklahoma. Well respected for his expertise and knowledge of artists and works of art of the American West, he has had articles published in American Art Review, Western Art Collector and Persimmon Hill. He has served as the President of Museums West Consortium, an association of 15 museums located in North America, organized for the advancement of Western American art, history and culture. In October 2015 Hopkins became an Honorary Member of the Cowboy Artists of America.
