SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Acrylic Painting Workshop with Artist Marc Hanson / "Painting Landscapes in Acrylic for Oil Painters"
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Acrylic Painting Workshop with Artist Marc Hanson / “Painting Landscapes in Acrylic for Oil Painters”\nWednesday\, November 18 – Friday\, November 20\, 2026\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis class is primarily for painters who want to try out acrylics as an alternative to oil paints. It would be most beneficial if you have painting experience in either oil or acrylic\, and are just looking for some guidance with the acrylic medium. If you’ve ever thought about working with acrylics as an alternative to oil paints\, this workshop will dive deep into how that might be an option for your work. After many years of painting with oil paints\, I have a few things to share about making acrylics part of your arsenal. I’ve battled acrylics\, experimented with them\, read about technique and materials\, practiced tirelessly\, been frustrated by them often\, and succeeded in conquering them once in a while\, over the last 10 years. I now use acrylics for about 90% of my work. In the workshop we will cover the paint\, mediums and supplies for both studio and plein air work\, the ‘whys’ and ‘why maybe nots’ of technique and methods for working with fast drying acrylics\, and how to adapt to that if you are used to painting taking forever to dry! Each morning will begin with a Q&A about anything acrylic\, followed by an instructional demo period\, and then a student work period in the afternoon. Students will work from their own photos and/or field studies on substrates that are up to 30″ maximum length or height. The supply list will go into more detail about what’s needed for the workshop. \nMinimum of 8 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $550.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $625.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about the Booth Art Academy\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Studio Workshop with Artist Barbara Jaenicke / "Composing the Poetic Landscape for Oil and Pastel"
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Studio Workshop with Artist Barbara Jaenicke / “Composing the Poetic Landscape for Oil and Pastel”\nMonday\, January 11 – Wednesday\, January 13\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis workshop takes a deep dive into the nuts and bolts of a strong landscape composition. The emphasis is on shapes and editing. And the goal is to create the illusion of subject matter details in your landscape painting without laboring over unnecessary rendering\, resulting in a more expressive and eloquent capture of your subject. We’ll address the thumbnail planning stage and then work through a painting process that maintains the initial shapes and editing\, while learning to make selective decisions for the finishing stages. Other painting skills\, especially values and edges\, will also be addressed regarding how those skills contribute to a good design. All information presented and demonstrated will apply equally to oil and pastel. Students will start off using instructor-provided reference photos but will have the option to use their own photos\, too. We’ll kick things off with a few composition exercises and then proceed to small studies that take the composition toward a finished piece. Students may work in pastel or oil\, or both\, although for this workshop\, it may be best to focus on one or the other. This workshop is open to all levels but geared primarily toward artists with at least some basic painting experience and familiarity with the supplies. \nFor more information about Barbara\, visit www.barbarajaenicke.com. \nMinimum of 10 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $525.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $600.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about the Booth Art Academy\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Painting Workshop with Victoria Barnhill / "Texture\, Depth\, and Color: Expressive Painting with the Palette Knife"
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Painting Workshop with Victoria Barnhill / “Texture\, Depth\, and Color” Expressive Painting with the Palette Knife”\nThursday\, February 4 – Saturday\, February 6\, 2026\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis workshop is designed for artists that are interested in expanding their use of texture\, experimenting with palette knife techniques\, and developing a more expressive\, process-driven approach to painting. The focus will be on developing transferable skills that can be applied across a wide range of subject matter. Students will explore how layered paint\, bold color relationships\, and surface variation can create energy movement\, and dimension without relying on traditional realism. In this workshop\, Victoria Barnhill will demonstrate her approach to constructing a painting form the ground up\, beginning with laying a background\, construction of composition with color blocking\, then developing depth and complexity through layering and intentional knife work. Emphasis will be placed on texture development\, creating depth using color theory\, and paint handling. Daily instruction will highlight demonstrations followed by guided working time and individual instruction at the easel. Students will learn how to loosen their approach\, expand their use of texture\, experiment with palette knife techniques\, and develop a more confident\, expressive painting style. Subject matter will focus on landscapes and botanical forms. While acrylic paint and palette knife use will be central to the workshop\, students who primarily work with brushes and oil painting are welcome and encouraged to integrate knife techniques into their existing practice. All skill levels welcome. \nMinimum of 6 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $400.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $475.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about the Booth  Art Academy\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Painting Workshop with Brett Weaver / "Effective Alternatives for the Allergic Artist"
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Painting Workshop with Brett Weaver / “Effective Alternatives for the Allergic Artist”\nThursday\, February 4 – Saturday\, February 6\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis is a 3-day intensive studio oil painting workshop specifically designed for intermediate level artists who are challenged with allergies\, as well as those who are seeking healthier oil painting alternatives free from mineral spirits and toxic fumes. Artists who are just wanting to further develop your skills as an oil painter will also benefit from the workshop. Due to allergies to petroleum distillates and flax\, Brett has adapted his studio to an environment free from mineral spirits and linseed oil and linen canvas. Brett will focus on effective techniques and use of alternative materials such as walnut oil and bio based thinner as well as tips for dealing with the frustrations of alternative painting substrates. Students will focus on building successful paintings through strong foundations and a bold honest approach\, encouraging students to build confidence and find strength in their weakness. Students will work from their own photos to help build their own personal voice. Brett will work with students to simplify their reference material and see it more abstractly\, finding creative patterns to incorporate into preliminary sketches that that they will further develop into a larger painting. Brett will work individually with students and do daily class demonstrations as necessary focusing on design fundamentals of composition and drawing and establishing mood through color harmony\, shapes\, and values. Students without allergies are encouraged to attend but asked to be respectful of the other students and come with an open-minded approach to learning. \nMinimum of 6 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $450.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $525.00 for not-yet members \nTo learn more about the Booth Art Academy\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Oil/Acrylic Workshop with Artist Patrick Lee / "How I Paint - A Process for Creative Flow and Authentic Style"
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Oil/Acrylic Workshop with Artist Patrick Lee / “How I Paint – A Process for Creative Flow and Authentic Style”\nWednesday\, February 10 – Friday\, February 12\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nGet to the heart of your authentic work and your personal style by 1) making a lot of work (quantity over quality). This quiets the internal critic and gives our unique ideas a chance to breath. 2) Having a deadline. This is the best antidote to procrastination and “waiting for inspiration”. 3) Focusing on process over product. See the first two points! Topics will include contour line drawing and memory\, value and its’ use in design and pattern\, use of the Notan in design and creative thought (improvisation)\, solid drawing and values as a basis for “looseness”\, keeping things simple\, subjective color\, breakdown and building back up of the image. I’ll do a demo of a painting for the first half of each day with the students painting the second half of the day. Attendees may use oils or acrylics. ***Students should bring their own photos to work from. \nMinimum of 8 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $550.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $625.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about Booth Art Academy\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 4-Day Workshop with Artist Kami Mendlick / "The Shape of Water: Painting the Illusion of Water Reflections with Oil Paints"
DESCRIPTION:4-Day Workshop with Artist Kami Mendlick /”The Shape of Water: Painting the Illusion of Water Reflections with Oil Paints”\nThursday\, March 11 – Sunday\, March 14\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis 4-day studio workshop will focus on painting realistic water with deep reflections. Learn Kami’s approach to creating beautiful water and the roll light plays in the scene\, as she shares her techniques used in painting water by employing shapes of color. You will learn her approach to building a painting beginning with graphing the image from both a plein air study and a photo reference\, then building with a wash\, followed by building up thicker paint. Each morning will begin with a lecture and a painting demonstration\, progressively moving the painting each morning\, building on each concept. As she moves through this process\, she will be emphasizing the importance of seeing one shape of color and how it relates to another – Color Relativity\, creating the illusion of light and atmosphere in the scene. Students are recommend to work from both photo references and plein air studies. The main purpose of this workshop is to provide tools and steps in studying and painting water in your paintings. Although\, it’s always more satisfying to have your own original concept\, the main purpose of this week is to arm you with information to take home and integrate into your own paintings. Kami will provide additional reference material to use\, if needed. There will be ample time to paint with critiques and feedback throughout the week. \nMinimum of 8 students\, Maximum of 16 students\nFEE: $700.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $775.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about the Booth Art Academy\, CLICK HERE.

SUMMARY:BAA 4-Day Portrait Workshop with Artist Michelle Dunaway /"Capturing the Essence"
DESCRIPTION:4-Day Portrait Workshop with Artist Michelle Dunaway / “Capturing the Essence”\nMonday\, March 15 – Thursday\, March 18\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nDuring this four day intensive workshop\, Michelle will lecture\, demonstrate her painting techniques\, and provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life. The class will focus on Alla Prima painting\, covering everything from composition and color mixing of skin tones to more advanced techniques such as color temperature which gives the visual illusion of the subject receding or coming forward in space. The beautiful intricacies of edges and brushwork will be a main focus as a way to lead the eye through the composition\, making punctuations in paint and resting spots for the eye. This tool can be observed in nature and portrayed in paint to evoke emotion and rhythms in the painting. The class will do three paintings over the four days: two head studies\, and a two-day pose that covers advanced techniques for capturing a likeness\, painting hands\, and placing the sitter in an environment. Michelle will also do a slideshow of her work\, including step-by-step photographs of her more elaborate finished studio work\, while discussing things to keep in mind when taking a study back into the studio to make a completed work for the gallery. Beginners to advanced students are welcome as Michelle will work one-on-one with each student to help them achieve their next level in painting and give students specific guidance to meet their individual artistic goals. \nMinimum of 10 students\, Maximum of 20 students\nFEE: $775.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $850.00 for not-yet-members

SUMMARY:BAA 3-Day Figure Drawing & Painting Workshop with Artist Michelle Dunaway
DESCRIPTION:3-Day Figure Drawing & Painting Workshop with Artist Michelle Dunaway\nFriday\, March 19 – Sunday\, March 21\, 2027\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nOver three days Michelle will guide students with demos and one-on-one instruction into drawing and painting the nude model. Day one: figure sketch in charcoal\, progressing from short poses which hone your hand eye coordination\, moving into a longer pose at the end of the day to complete a more finished figure drawing. Even if you are new to figure drawing\, there is nothing that trains your eye better for portraits than quick gesture drawing\, there is nothing that trains your eye better for portraits than quick gesture drawing from life. Day 2: figure quick sketch in oil. We will move into a full color palette creating expressive figure paintings focused on gesture\, movement\, and capturing the essence of the pose. Figurative gesture paintings are like emotive movements of music… we will discuss how to implement this energy and emotion into longer paintings (both figure and portrait). Day 3: long pose figure painting. Taking everything we have practiced and building upon the days before\, we will incorporate these themes into a long pose figure painting for the duration of the third day. Previous figure drawing experience is not necessary\, but a general understanding of oils and basic color mixing is recommended. Students may choose whether to work entirely with drawing material or a limited or full color palette. Models do allow photography so bring your camera. One afternoon immediately following class Michelle will instruct a bonus session on how to photograph models for painting. Michelle is volunteering her time for this but there will be an extra fee of $50 paid directly to the model by each artist wanting to participate. Each artist will have the opportunity to pose the model themselves to gather unique reference under Michelle’s guidance. \nMinimum of 10 students\, maximum of 20 students\nFEE: $650.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $725.00 for not-yet-members \nTo learn more about the Booth Art Academy\, CLICK HERE.
