Portraits of Hope
January 4 – March 5, 2023

Portraits of Hope, Inc. provides support, encouragement, love, and hope to women and children facing life’s challenges after incarceration, drug addiction, and domestic violence. Plein Air Painters of America: 35 Years Outdoors
October 20, 2022 – February 26, 2023

This exhibition showcases one work of art by each of the current/active members of the Plein Air Painters of America created within the last two years. Each work should either have been started outside and a substantial portion of the painting done en plein aire or artists may bundle several studies in one frame to create a larger work of art, but are limited to one framed entry. The Shirt Wearers: The Plains Indian Art of Cathy A. Smith
August 27, 2022 – January 8, 2023

This exhibit features the war shirts and regalia of 12 historically important Plains Indian Chiefs created by Cathy A. Smith. It is a tribute to the great leaders of the plains, plateau and prairies of North America. It is educational in that it is the only authentic recreation of the documented (but now non-existent) regalia of these important men. Through the Years: Kenny Rogers’ Photographs of America
February 17 – September 10, 2022

When Kenny Rogers decided to take up photography he went all in, learning from some of the best on the planet. Former Ansel Adams assistant John Sexton regularly went on shoots with Kenny between performing gigs. Yousuf Karsch, the master portrait photographer, not only gave him tips, but also wrote the forward to a book on Kenny’s photos. Rogers loved shooting his celebrity friends and using photography as a way to meet new ones. His images of iconic Western lands are as breathtaking as his images of common folk are poignant. Western American Art South of the Sweet Tea Line VI: Toast to Texas
March 24 – July 31, 2022

Western works of art in private Texas collections is the focus of this year’s “Sweet Tea VI” exhibition. After visiting numerous private homes and cultivating several upper level Booth memberships, these collectors have agreed to loan pieces from their collections to share with the rest of the Booth membership base. Friends Reunited: T. D. Kelsey, Julie Oriet and the Keough Collection
January 22 – May 15, 2022

T.D. Kelsey grew up on a ranch near Bozeman, Montana. During his career he was a rodeo cowboy, trained and showed cutting horses, and worked as a commercial pilot for United Airlines until 1979 when he resigned to devote full time to his art. His interest in, and promotion of, Texas longhorn cattle, maintenance of a wild horse herd on his ranch, passion for Africa and its wildlife, and concern for the conservation of wildlife worldwide have inspired many of his works. He is known for his intense, impressionistic sculptures that capture the spirit of his subjects. He is a member emeritus of the Cowboy Artists of America.  CLICK HERE to view Friends Reunited.

Emergence: Wildlife Art by Ashley Rader
January 4 – March 6, 2022

Using a limited palette and art supplies like sketching tools, oil and acrylic paints, Wildlife Artist Ashley Rader brings her mixed media subjects to life. She says, “I want to capture the beauty and detail of the wildlife that I have loved my entire life. I strive to create a sense of vitality in each painting. Mammals in Glacier: Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey & Waterfalls in Yellowstone: M.C. Poulsen

October 21, 2021 – February 27, 2022

Artist M.C. Poulsen has embarked on a multiyear journey to hike and ride horseback into the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park and capture the waterfalls that the general public never gets to experience. “Painting the Falls of Yellowstone” a PBS Documentary that aired on June 2017 highlights this journey that parallels the early artists Moran and Bierstadt who captured the mystique that draws the public to Yellowstone today. Poulsen doesn’t want these cosmic beauties to remain hidden in the backcountry; he wants to share them with the human race, so they, too, are flooded with the same emotions he experienced CLICK HERE to view a tour through the exhibit. As a companion to the above we are bringing in Nancy Cawdrey’s collection of approximately 25 silk paintings of all the major animals in Glacier National Park. Graham Hobart: Out of Africa and Into the West
July 31, 2021 – January 23, 2022

Born in southern Africa, Graham Hobart takes on the American West through his extraordinary black and white infrared photography. In 2014 upon seeing Hobart’s photographs of African animals and landscapes, Booth Western Art Museum Executive Director Seth Hopkins commissioned a photograph from Hobart and dared him to “go out and capture the American West in his unique illustrative style as he had in Africa.” This exhibition is Hobart’s response to that call and features over a decade of his work in the American West and Africa. CLICK HERE to view the 3D  tour.

Tucker Smith: A Celebration of Nature
September 11, 2021 – January 2, 2022

Artist Tucker Smith is nationally renowned for his balanced, subtle paintings inspired by the wildlife and mountain atmosphere that has been such an integral part of his life. His home and studio on the Hoback Rim in Western Wyoming offer easy access to his favorite subjects; vast landscapes, sprawling cattle ranches, and the back country with its abundant wildlife and natural, beauty. 18th Annual Kids Cowboy Up! Virtual Art Exhibition

Members and guests are invited to view the 18th Annual Kids Cowboy Up exhibition featuring artwork by members of the Boys & Girls Club of Bartow County and the Hands of Christ After School Program. CAPTIVATED: Rossin’s Southwest & BEYOND
May 16 – September 26, 2021

Ross Rossin grew up watching Western movies.  This would not seem unusual, except that was in Bulgaria. Drawing on those memories, he has always wanted to visit Monument Valley.  Following a 9-day road trip through the Southwest in 2019 with Booth Executive Director, Seth Hopkins, Rossin was inspired to create a series of paintings.  Featuring portraits of people they met and depictions of the lands they encountered the show confirms the American West still has the power to inspire both Americans and those from around the globe. Vaquero Legacies & Diverse Descendants
February 13 – July 11, 2021

Bringing together over ten photographers, this show traces the many legacies left behind by the first cowboys to come to the Americas in the 1700s. Legacies brings to the forefront the charros of Mexico, Indian Relay Races and Rodeos, the paniolos of Hawaiʻi, Black Rodeos and cowboy culture, and many more rich expressions of this deeply Western tradition. Carrie Penley: Reflections on Nature

Contemporary artist Carrie Penley has strong Georgia roots, living in Carrolton and having graduated from UGA with an art degree in 1995. She describes herself as an American artist who utilizes different forms of media and techniques, including collage materials, neutral colors, expressive brush strokes and contrast to create unique works. Southwest Rising: Contemporary Art & the Legacy of Elaine Horwitch
October 10, 2020 – April 25, 2021

From the Tucson Art Museum  Art dealer Elaine Horwitch was a major force in contemporary art in the Southwest from the early 1970s until her death in 1991, responsible for launching the careers of hundreds of artists from the region. With galleries in Scottsdale, Santa Fe, Sedona, and Palm Springs, she was a leader in fostering what has been called “new Western art” or “Southwest pop.” This exhibition highlights the works of some of the Elaine Horwitch Galleries’ most popular artists. Drawn from the Tucson Museum of Art collection and loans from Arizona and New Mexico, these paintings, sculptures, and works on paper reveal the breadth of art and innovation that occurred in the Southwest at a pivotal time of change. Featured artists include: Tom Palmore, Lynn Taber, Billy Schenck, John Fincher, James Havard, Fritz Scholder, Anne Coe, Larry Rivers, and Bob Wade. Indians & Cowboys: Redefined by Duke & Woodard
October 22, 2020 – February 21, 2021

A member of a fifth generation family from Colorado, Duke Beardsley’s western roots run deep. His unique blend of modern art styling and traditional western iconography has made him a favorite among fans of contemporary Western art. Greg Woodard was originally best known for his carvings of birds from Tupelo Wood and has won many major bird carving competitions. Now he also works in bronze and has broadened his subject matter to reflect western themes, sometimes giving them and ironic twist.  Virtual Member opening on October 22 on Booth’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. American Dreams Or Imagined Lands: Terri Loewenthal, Jack Spencer, Christa Blackwood, Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe
August 22, 2020  – January 24, 2021

Working with a private donor (Jeffrey Hugh Newman), Jackson Fine Art, the Andrew Smith Gallery and the Candela Gallery. American Dreams or Imagined Lands brings together artwork by Jack Spencer, Terri Loewenthal, Christa Blackwood, Mark Klett and Byron Wolfe. The exhibition includes photographs from seven different projects created by these artists that display their unique perspectives on the American Landscape. Edward, Philip, and Matt Moulthrop: Western Woods
July 7 – October 4, 2020

Three generations of Georgia’s Moulthrop family have led the way in elevating wood turning into an important art form, primarily using native southeastern woods. Ed (deceased) taught his son Philip and grandson Matt the skills of wood turning and each of them has developed a unique style and created distinctive designs. New Beginnings: An American Story of Romantics and Modernists in the West
February 1 – August 23, 2020

Santa Fe and Taos were among the most important national and international art communities during the 1920s and 1930s. This exhibit explores their similarities, differences, and connections. Making Their Mark: American Women Artists

Robert Glenn Ketchum & Eliot Porter: On Seeing Color
March 7 – July 26, 2020

This exhibition explores Porter’s influence on Ketchum’s photographic career. Porter’s photographs on-loan from the Amon Carter Museum and were personally selected by Ketchum to highlight how the two photographers approached the American landscape and its vivid colors. This exhibition also explores the technical challenges both artists faced in bringing their colorful photographs to life, offering a teaching moment on the emergence of color photography as a medium. Plein Air Painters of the Southeast
January 7, 2020 – March 8, 2020

Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAP-SE), was founded in 2001 by Dee Beard Dean and is an organization of professional plein air painters bound by a common passion to promote the traditional methods of painting en plein air, or in the outdoors. The group currently features over 40 of the best plein air painters in the Southeast. Opening reception January 16.

 

Lonesome Dove: Photographs by Bill Wittliff                                       
Through February 9, 2020 

The Lonesome Dove miniseries, which first aired on CBS in 1989, continues to capture audiences. During its filming, renowned photographer Bill Wittliff documented the series with stunning photographs of the cast among the Western landscapes and in their iconic roles . Lonesome Dove, a travelling exhibition created by the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University in San Marcos in partnership with Humanities Texas, showcases fifty-five sepia toned prints from Wittliff, and audiences can again relive the exciting journey of Gus and Call.

Booth Photography Guild Annual Exhibition
Through November 10, 2019

This juried exhibition features the work who are members of the Booth Photography Guild, a group that meets monthly for educational photographic programs.

Warhol and the West
Through December 31, 2019

WARHOL and the WEST will be the first museum exhibition to fully explore Andy Warhol’s love of the west represented in his art, movies, attire, relationships and collecting.  In 1986, Warhol completed his Cowboys and Indians portfolio, the last major project before his death.  It included images of 14 iconic Western subjects such as Custer, Geronimo and John Wayne. This group of images has been exhibited at many museums, but never in the full context of Warhol’s continued involvement with Western people, places and things. 

His other Western subjects include Elvis as a movie gunslinger, Clint Eastwood, Dennis Hopper, guns, Indian art, Western artists R.C. Gorman, Georgia O’Keeffe and Fritz Scholder, plus two Western movies he produced.  Warhol wore cowboy boots more often than not and loved to travel to Taos, Fort Worth and Colorado.  All of this and more will be revealed in Warhol and the West, a major traveling exhibition of more than 100 objects and works of art. Opening August 25 in Cartersville and traveling over the next year to Oklahoma City and Tacoma, Washington.

 

Scene: Portraits From the 80s by Jeannette Montgomery Barron
Through September 1, 2019

This intimate collection of portraits from Jeannette Montgomery Barron’s series Scene catalogs the many faces of the New York City art scene in the 1980s. Guests will see some familiar faces, such as: artist Andy Warhol, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, and actor Willem Dafoe. Photographs by Barron will serve as a primer featuring images from Warhols’ time in the spotlight as we move closer to opening Warhol and the West.

Artistic Photography Today: Artists Re-Presenting Reality
Through September 1, 2019

Guest curator and artist, John Mariana gathers a unique group of prints to explore the limits of photography in the digital age. John says, “Photographic Artists make Photographic Art, not take them, shoot them, capture them or snap them. They see the world differently and then show others how they see and feel the real world. The final artistic print is their representation of the world through their eyes, mind, heart and creative artistic talents. The tools of the craft are a camera and a lens but the print is the result of their artistic vision. 

Six Navajo Masters: Abeyta, Begay, Johns, Whitehorse, Whitethorne & Yazzie                              Through August 4, 2019 

Featuring works from six Navajo artists considered to be masters of their craft Tony
Abeyta, Shonto Begay, David Johns, Emmi Whitehorse, Baje Whitethorne, Sr., and
Larry Yazzie. This exhibit focuses on the rich cultural and spiritual Navajo traditions.
The concept for this exhibit was a collaboration between Booth Museum and guest
curator Peggy Lanning, a former gallery owner. 

Treasures from the Vault – 15 Years of Collecting at Booth Museum                               
Through  July 28, 2019

Even before the Booth opened to the public in 2003 the museum was collecting a wide variety of art and objects and has continued throughout the years since.  While every object is important, only the best, largest, most relevant or more important may make it on display.  This exhibition will highlight items of significance that have rarely if ever been shown, including small study paintings, a 2000 Palm Beach voting machine and other presidential material, miniature sculptures, and new acquisitions.

Bob Kolbrener: 50 years in the West
Through  June 2, 2019

This retrospective of Bob Kolbrener’s black and white photography will showcase his extensive body of work on the American West, all created in the “old fashioned way” by using large format cameras and fiber-based prints. Having trained under Ansel Adams, Kolbrener captures breathtaking ephemeral moments in nature along with other powerful scenes with his signature wit, insight, and sometimes humor.

Mood and Tone: The Art of T. Allen Lawson                                                                              Through April 28, 2019

T. Allen Lawson is drawn to the quieter side of life. Over time he has developed a discipline of patiently observing and studying the often unnoticed rhythms and subtleties of his surroundings. In his paintings he strives to build layers and textures with pigment to create the abstraction and nuanced depth he feels in nature and the world around him. Born and raised in Sheridan, Wyoming, the American West is an integral part of who he is.

East/West Visions: Scott Christensen & Quang Ho
Though January 20, 2019 – Temporary Exhibition Gallery

This exhibition brings together two of the country’s top landscape painters, highlighting both the similarities and differences in their styles. Both artists will serve as Featured Artists for the 2018 Southeastern Cowboy Festival & Symposium, delivering the keynote address and  workshops during the week.
