Frederic Remington (1861-1909), American illustrator, painter, sculptor and writer; considered the greatest Western artist ever

His Art Shaped Our View of the American West

Better known today for his bronze sculptures of cowboys and American Indians on horseback, Remington was also an important painter, illustrator and writer. In fact, during his lifetime, it was his paintings, rather than his bronzes, that built his reputation. Leading magazines such as Harper’s Weekly, Century and Cosmopolitan frequently published his action-filled illustrations, images largely responsible for the public’s impressions of the Old West – images that linger even today.
