4-Day Workshop with John Taft / “Design and Composition in Painting”
Wednesday, October 22 – Saturday, October 25, 2025
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

How about a focus on COMPOSITION in the landscape painting workshop? We know it is an essential part of painting. In this workshop, composition will be our primary focus through out. We won’t forget to consider the other essentials like color and drawing, values and edges, but a better understanding of composition brings all the elements together, liberating the artist to more successfully convey their vision with any subject. We’ll begin with the basics and gradually move beyond general formulas. You will receive an overview of dynamic symmetry, removing some of the mystery to this design approach as we look at how it has been applied by artists for centuries (like… what do Van Gogh and Poussin have in common?). The workshop will include daily lessons, on location painting as weather allows, painting demonstrations, and of course, both individual and group critiques. The plan for day four is to develop a little larger work “in studio” from one of our previous days’ paintings.
All levels are welcome, and while I plan to demonstrate in oil, all mediums are welcome as well. If you would like to strengthen your sense of composition for painting any subject, I encourage you to attend!
