3-Day Oil Workshop with Artist Susan Patton / “Features of the Face”
Susan will share images from her recent visit to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, where she closely observed the eyes of several portraits done by master artists and studied what made them different from each other. In this workshop, she will teach how to identify and interpret various patterns, shapes, and characteristics in the features of the face. Susan will demonstrate painting the features while expanding on what she is thinking about during the process – what to avoid and important areas to get correct. She will also teach how to be observant before painting your subject in order to capture not only likeness but character. A portion of one day of class will be spent at the Booth Western Art Museum where participants will observe and sketch features from the artwork and photos, including the Carolyn & James Millar Presidential Gallery, where they will note many different shapes of features and look for the patterns discussed in class. Entry into the Museum is included in the workshop fee. Susan will demonstrate her way of premixing colors in her widely acclaimed “color circle”, and her newly developed “flesh tone circle” – a way of premixing flesh tones to give you a head start to finding the range of values and temperatures that you need in portraits. She will provide one-on-one feedback as students paint and draw the features of the face from photo references.
