DESCRIPTION:John Lomax III: Preserving Western Music One Song at a Time\nSaturday\, March 8\, 2025\, 1:00 PM \nThe Booth Western Art Museum invites the community\, and Gala & Art Auction attendees\, to John Lomax III: Presenting Western Music One Song at a Time\, on Saturday\, March 8 at 1:00 PM. \nOur guest speaker will be John Lomax III\, a former national-level music talent manager. On his 80th birthday\, John released his debut CD American Folk Songs\, featuring material gleaned from the work of his father and grandfather. The latter is the famed Western music historian and musicologist John Avery Lomax\, who was the original chronicler of classic Western songs such as “Home on the Range”. Were it not for his publications such as Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads and Songs of the Cattle Trail and Cow Camp\, many of the most cherished cowboy and western songs may have been lost to history. During this lively program\, Director Seth Hopkins will interview Lomax III and he will sing Western classics in a traditional cowboy style. \nIncluded in General Admission and FREE for Booth Museum Members.

Discover hands-on activities and rich resources to bring these stories to life in your classroom. DESCRIPTION:3-Day Oil/Acrylic Workshop with Artist Patrick Lee / “How I Paint – A Process for Creative Flow and Authentic Style”\nThursday – Saturday\, February 20 – 22\, 2025\n9:00 am –4:00 pm \nGet to the heart of your authentic work and your personal style by 1) making a lot of work (quantity over quality).  This quiets the internal critic and gives our unique ideas a chance to breathe.   2) Having a deadline.  This is the best antidote to procrastination and “waiting for inspiration”.  3) Focusing on process over product.  See the first two points! Topics will include contour line drawing and memory\, value and its’ use in design and pattern\, use of the Notan in design and creative thought (improvisation)\, solid drawing and values as a basis for “looseness”\, keeping things simple\, subjective color\, breakdown and building back up of the image. I’ll do a demo of a painting for the first half of each day with the students painting the second half of the day. SUMMARY:4-Day “Capturing the Essence” Workshop
DESCRIPTION:4-Day Portrait Workshop with Artist Michelle Dunaway / “Capturing the Essence”\nFebruary 10 – 13\, 2025\n9:00 am –4:00 pm \nDuring this four day intensive workshop\, Michelle will lecture\, demonstrate her painting techniques\, and provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life. The class will focus on Alla Prima painting\, covering everything from composition and color mixing of skin tones to more advanced techniques such as color temperature which gives the visual illusion of the subject receding or coming forward in space.  The beautiful intricacies of edges and brushwork will be a main focus as a way to lead the eye through the composition\, making punctuations in paint and resting spots for the eye. This tool can be observed in nature and portrayed in paint to evoke emotion and rhythms in the painting.  The class will do three paintings over the four days:  two head studies and a two-day pose that covers advanced techniques for capturing a likeness\, painting hands\,  and placing the sitter in an environment.  Michelle will also do a slideshow of her work\, including step-by-step photographs of her more elaborate finished studio work\, while discussing things to keep in mind when taking a study back into the studio to make a completed work for the gallery. Beginners to advanced students are welcome as Michelle will work one-on-one with each student to help them achieve their next level in painting and give students  specific guidance to meet their individual artistic goals. \nMinimum of 8 students\, Maximum of 18 students \nFEE:  $775.00 for Booth Museum Members\, $850.00 for not-yet-members \nREGISTER
