It has the power to draw a viewer from across the room\, then reward their attention with richness and detail up close. That ability isn’t accidental; it’s the result of deliberate design. In this workshop\, we’ll bridge the technical with the poetic\, exploring how compositional strategies can spark both emotional resonance and biological response. You’ll learn how to use these tools not only to capture attention\, but also to guide the eye and stir the imagination. At the heart of our work together is developing a personal process. A reliable process is more than a routine–it’s a framework that builds confidence\, nurtures consistency\, and allows your unique voice and style to emerge with depth and clarity. By weaving together compositional strategy and personal practice\, you’ll gain the tools to create paintings that engage at every level: powerful from a distance\, compelling up close\, and unmistakably your own. This workshop is oil focused but students are welcome to use other medium. This workshop is intended for the serious student with at least a basic handle on their medium through working professionals. We’ll begin with value studies\, focusing on simplification and creating a dynamic\, solid underlying structure. Shifting into color\, we’ll explore color theory and the properties of light and shadow-ranging from the basics to more advanced applications– while experimenting with different approaches to palette\, harmony\, and mood. Together we’ll troubleshoot and refine your paintings\, exploring texture\, paint application\, and ways to push your work further. Along the way\, I’ll share my process through demonstrations and examples\, while guiding you to apply concepts such as compositional contracts\, simplification\, and color relationships. Each student will receive individual attention tailored to their strengths and challenges. DESCRIPTION:3-Day Painting Workshop with Shanna Kunz / “The Art of Less: Simplifying for Stronger Paintings”\nThursday\, September 24 – Saturday\, September 26\, 2026\n9:00 AM – 4:00 PM \nThis workshop will explore design and color composition in plein air and/or studio painting. Some experience with your medium is required\, though all levels are welcome! Shanna will be working in oil with linen panels. We will simplify the process of design and create a dramatic landscape with emotional subtleties and compressed value ranges while maintaining the illusion of reality. What you will learn: Simplify and abstract your shapes and make sense out of all the information screaming for your attention. Organize your composition into simplified masses and value patterns for a more organized design\, while creating the spatial relationships that create the three-dimensional illusion that helps you feel like you can walk into the painting. Learn how to make a series of work to explore different emotions in each piece. Choose a ground color and block-in that serve as a pattern to create an emotional composition with a dynamic statement and rhythm. Create depth with the use of temperature shifts and a variety of edges\, gently moving your audience  through the painting while keeping their attention where you want it to be. Work with brushes and palette knives to create variations of thick and thin textures. Personal instruction and guidance will be provided. Shanna will guide you through the decision-making process from the very beginning of your painting. She will help you learn to choose and enhance your theme\, and to identify palette choices that make your painting more engaging. You will use brushes\, palette knives and glazes to develop your authentic style.
