3-Day Watercolor Workshop with Artist Cindy Baron / “Innovative Methods to Bring Richness and Life to Your Landscapes”

A different, unique approach to creating watercolor paintings that sing.  I will show you how mixing layers of paint with a limited palette will hold their vibrancy, harmonize, and create an atmosphere that is exciting and complimentary to nature.  My watercolors are filled with richness and depth applied only by applications of washes of color that are transparent and opaque.  As a watercolorist and oil painter, I am able to apply techniques from both to give my paintings a unique feel.  You will learn a different approach to mixing, throwing color on paper, and letting them mix to appear more natural to nature.  Step-by-step I will show you how my palette of colors, techniques and lifting of pigment will develop into a painting with harmony and atmosphere.  I have a very unusual approach. I will share all my tools, materials, and knowledge. I will introduce gouache and show you how to bring an exciting, spontaneous life to your paintings. With this class you will be given an insight into the capability of what watercolor paintings can achieve.  We will learn the importance of studies to help problem solve a composition, the importance of subtle value changes to harmonize a painting, and glazing techniques that unite a painting.

Once you learn the basic mechanics of painting the landscape, it’s time to learn how to add the poetry. We’ll also address how to make every stroke count, considering the particulars of how you apply paint to surface and how the quality of the application will contribute to your painting’s message.  Each day of the workshop will begin with a demonstration followed by students working on a specific painting exercise for the remainder of the day.  Students will receive plenty of individual help from the instructor at the easel during their painting time. This workshop is open to all levels, although artists with at least some basic landscape painting experience will benefit most.

The costumed figure is exciting and challenging to paint. We will explore several different ways to light a figure in the studio and will do several paintings in the 3 days using various techniques: a white background, a toned background, a limited palette as well as a full palette of colors. I also incorporate block printing into my paintings on occasion — I will demonstrate that and bring some scraps of easy to cut material for you to make your own small stamps. It is helpful to be well-versed in all of these approaches when you start to consider the best way to implement a painting idea. Are you trying to create something straightforward, or mysterious, or monumental? Learn how to fill your bag of tricks with options.  I will do short demonstrations, all in oil, but you will get a lot of painting time in with one-on-one instruction. Other media is welcome, but my expertise is in oil.  The last afternoon I will be happy to critique two pieces you bring from home. 3-Day Painting Workshop with Artist Johanne Mangi / “Painting Horses – Plain & Simple”

Visually there’s nothing quite like the beauty of a horse whether in Portrait or Landscape. This workshop will take the mystery out of how to paint these majestic beauties. Johanne is known for her ability to teach in simple terms and use methods that push you beyond your imagination. But first you have to know what you are looking at. Students will go on a field trip to a local farm to learn and observe firsthand the important landmarks that make this subject look real and alive. Through demos and attentive instruction students will walk away with new confidence. This workshop is not about copying but understanding what it is you are painting. The point is to retain this knowledge and put it to good use no matter what you choose to paint. This is not a “one trick pony” workshop. Johanne’s goal is not to burden you with terminology and rules. It’s all about painting and getting the results you crave. She has always encouraged an expanded limited palette to keep choices simple when learning value and color. It’s not that scary. Drawing and edges? Not a problem. Be prepared for fun and hard work. This 3 Day Workshop packs a punch!

The emphasis of this class will be on how to create paintings with more visual impact. The importance of fundamentals will be our starting point.  This workshop will explore the process of  making a piece of art instead of a copy of a photo. We will stress the importance of having a plan when you start a painting which will help tremendously with your success rate. Plan to create two smaller paintings daily. Bring photos and/or field paintings for reference.  There will be demos, individual attention, and hopefully a few laughs.

This workshop focuses on the fundamentals of landscape drawing and painting outdoors using the principles of good design, value, drawing, edges, color, and strokes or texture that applies to pastels as well as other mediums.  The importance of simplifying the scene using a limited value range to produce a stronger design will be discussed and practiced daily, with emphasis on how to clarify your emotional response to the subject. Students are encouraged to write their impressions down as well and to take photos/video of their scene for future reference. Each day, students will be doing preliminary thumbnail sketches then field studies using soft pastels.  I will be demonstrating my various approaches to pastel painting daily, outdoors, and provide one-on-one instruction at the easel. Using geometric shapes in still-life set-ups students will learn (or refresh their skills) in: drawing, perspective, value, composition, depth of field, and paint application. These shapes are found in the landscape, i.e. a cone may represent a spruce tree, the cylinder a tree trunk, a half sphere the bouquet of treetops and the cube a rough hewn rock. Like puzzle pieces, the halftones, cast shadows and reflected lights are key players that link the shade and light families. Aerial perspective is gained with overlap, size/scale change, value, and edges. Color theory, color mixing, and composition will round out the class giving you a solid foundation and strengthen your skills as we create a painting. Acrylics and water soluble oils are welcome.
