This 4-day studio workshop will focus on painting realistic water with deep reflections. Learn Kami’s approach to creating beautiful water and the roll light plays in the scene, as she shares her techniques used in painting water by employing shapes of color. You will learn her approach to building a painting beginning with graphing the image from both a plein air study and a photo reference, then building with a wash, followed by building up thicker paint. Each morning will begin with a lecture and a painting demonstration, progressively moving the painting each morning, building on each concept. As she moves through this process, she will be emphasizing the importance of seeing one shape of color and how it relates to another – Color Relativity, creating the illusion of light and atmosphere in the scene. Students are recommended to work from both photo references and plein air studies. The main purpose of this workshop is to provide tools and steps in studying and painting water in your paintings. Although, it’s always more satisfying to have your own original concept, the main purpose of this week is to arm you with information to take home and integrate into your own paintings. 4-Day Workshop with Artist Regina Lyubovnaya / “Logic of Painting”
In this course, we will approach still-life and portrait painting not from the perspective of technique or dogma, but from a multiplicity of choices. Our focus will be on understanding why certain approaches are more effective and beautiful than others. We will learn to identify the task before us and view it as a field of open possibilities, recognizing that there is always more than one way to solve it. To paint with logic and understanding is to remain open and receptive. Simply being told how to solve a problem is just following someone else’s steps. I will explain how painting solutions emerge from an understanding and perception of light, space, and form. By employing value, color, edges, brushstrokes, and paint quality, we can translate visual information into beautiful paintings that are guided by our visual aesthetic ideas. Note: Working with a model is optional. Students may continue working on still-life if they prefer.

During this four day intensive workshop, Michelle will lecture, demonstrate her painting techniques, and provide one-on-one instruction as students paint from life. The class will focus on Alla Prima painting, covering everything from composition and color mixing of skin tones to more advanced techniques such as color temperature which gives the visual illusion of the subject receding or coming forward in space. The beautiful intricacies of edges and brushwork will be a main focus as a way to lead the eye through the composition, making punctuations in paint and resting spots for the eye. This tool can be observed in nature and portrayed in paint to evoke emotion and rhythms in the painting. The class will do three paintings over the four days: two head studies and a two-day pose that covers advanced techniques for capturing a likeness, painting hands, and placing the sitter in an environment. Michelle will also do a slideshow of her work, including step-by-step photographs of her more elaborate finished studio work, while discussing things to keep in mind when taking a study back into the studio to make a completed work for the gallery. Beginners to advanced students are welcome as Michelle will work one-on-one with each student to help them achieve their next level in painting and give students specific guidance to meet their individual artistic goals.

3-Day Workshop with Artist Ann Larsen / “Field Sketch to Finished Painting – An Impressionist Approach”
This workshop is designed for students wishing to loosen their style and capture light, color and the “impressionistic” moment in their larger paintings. Working up to a larger painting takes planning that differs from a field sketch or small color study. We will focus on how to complete a large painting from smaller work completed plein air or in the studio. The greatest success with a larger painting is in the planning process. I will work with each student to help them refine their sketches to get the most dynamic composition before they place any paint on their canvas. Emphasis will be on composing the painting, getting down the large masses and quickly covering the canvas with the overall design before beginning to lay in heavier brushwork Historical and contemporary artists’ work will be discussed as it pertains to strong composition, value, color and brushwork. As each student’s work progresses, the use of edges to help move the views eye through the painting will be demonstrated.

5-Day Indoor Oil Workshop with Artist Jill Carver / “Aesthetic Principles for Landscape Design”
Jill will help you realize that design is truly where creativity exists! Elevate your landscape paintings by exploring concept-driven design choices. Finding the balance of unity and variety between and within the elements of shape, value, and color, is key to creating stronger paintings. We will be making those choices according to our subject matter and what we want to say about it. Setting an intention (establishing a concept) and then exploring your design choices, using these ‘tools’, will expand your vocabulary as a painter. The possibilities are endless! This is a design course that extends beyond compositional division and placement devices. It extends beyond thinking that landscape painting is an attempt to create a literal 3D rendering that the viewer can walk into. Jill takes a more expansive view that a painting is a decorative 2D panel upon which we create an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of color shapes. Regardless of style, regardless of detail-level, I argue that aligning your composition with your concept (by managing unity and variety within shape, value, and color) is the essential step in moving forward with your work. Jill will structure the workshop through set exercises, lectures, demos, and brainstorming discussions. Students will be working from their own visual material as well as that provided. There will be an optional class dinner early in the week so that students can chat to Jill informally.
Note: Advanced-beginner to advanced level painters. You must be an experienced and regular painter to fully benefit from this class.

3-Day Figure Painting Workshop with Seth Haverkamp / “Energized Start, Graceful Finish”
In this workshop, students will work from a live model to vigorously apply paint in simplified blocks to capture the gesture of the pose. Using a limited palette, students will paint with both thin and thick paint, in conjunction with wiping paint out, to achieve a successful drawing. Students will then work on pushing values to paint in the fall of light and add a three dimensional effect. Using a grey toned canvas with paint scumbled over it, with thick paint in the lighter areas, a fully realized figure can be achieved. Paint manipulation and brush handling will be discussed and demonstrated. Seth will discuss how this leads directly into a multiple layered studio figure painting. Seth will also discuss the similarity between painting from life and from photographs.

Through demos, guided exercises, and instructor feedback, students will learn how to understand the temperature relationships of light and shadow, mix harmonious color palettes that convey mood and time of day, create the illusion of volume using hue, value, and chroma, simplify complex lighting into clear color relationships, and avoid common pitfalls that flatten a painting.

4-Day Still-Life Workshop with Stephanie Birdsall / “Keeping It Real”
Painting from life is an exciting way to learn! This intense but fun class will focus on how the light changes and how to cope with it: the expression of your brush strokes and how to observe actual color and mix it to achieve another level of painting. Brushstrokes not only define form but lead your eye through your painting. You will learn spatial awareness, developing a sense of depth and recognizing edges and comparing values. It’s an opportunity to understand how light and shadow define form. And all this plays to creating a strong composition. Being physically present with the subject can create a deeper emotional connection, which can be conveyed in your painting. Are you excited about your subject and does it show? It’s an “everything” workshop. Whether you work from photos or love plein air, this will enhance the way you perceive your subjects and bring more depth to your paintings. Subject matter will be still-life and whatever is in-season.

Whether you’re painting cloud studies or skies within a larger landscape, you’ll come away with practical tools and a clearer sense of what makes a sky painting work. I’ll walk you through my process step by step and you’ll have time to paint with plenty of individual help and feedback along the way. You’ll leave with multiple studies, at least one more resolved piece, and (hopefully!) a renewed excitement to paint the sky. Open to oil painters of all levels.

3-Day Oil Painting Workshop with Artist Krystii Melaine / “Learning to See Accurately and Paint Creatively”
Learning to see with the eyes of an artist allows you to interpret any subject accurately in oil paint. Understanding how to analyze form, light, tones, colors, and edges from life will help you to paint the depth of the real subject when working from photos. Krystii will demonstrate two ways to start a painting – sight-size from life or a gridded drawing from a photo. Then she shows how to break the subject down into easily analyzed segments, painting alla prima and finishing each area as you work. Light falling on planes, color mixing, handling edges and more will be demonstrated in ways that are easy to understand. You can also try tools and techniques to add abstract elements to your paintings. Students can choose to paint from a still life in the studio, or work from their own reference photos of animals, people, or objects. (No landscapes please.) All levels are welcome with individual instruction tailored to your needs. A visit to the Booth Museum to discuss Krystii’s three life-size portraits of Native Americans is included. This will be a workshop packed with information, ideas, and inspiration to take your paintings and creativity to the next level from wherever you are now!

Learn how to make a series of work to explore different emotions in each piece. Choose a ground color and block-in that serve as a pattern to create an emotional composition with a dynamic statement and rhythm. Create depth with the use of temperature shifts and a variety of edges, gently moving your audience through the painting while keeping their attention where you want it to be. Work with brushes and palette knives to create variations of thick and thin textures. Personal instruction and guidance will be provided. Shanna will guide you through the decision-making process from the very beginning of your painting.
