Life on a Cattle Trail

Invite a member of the Museum’s education staff into your classroom to present a unique lesson about life on a cattle trail. Designed to augment classroom lessons about the American West, this program introduces students to the role of the American cowboy, and the names and locations of the early cattle trails, while featuring artwork from the Museum’s collection.  
As the discovery box is unpacked, students will handle reproductions of objects that traveled on chuck wagons while making important discoveries about the life of the American cowboy.

Grades: Appropriate for grades 2-5

Cost: $50 within Bartow County
$60 outside of Bartow County

Group size: 30 or less

Program length: 1 hour

GPS: SS5H3a. – Describe the role of the cattle trails in the late 19 th century: include the Black Cowboys of Texas, the Great Western Cattle Trail, and the Chisholm Trail.

Native Americans of the West
Invite a member of the Museum’s education staff into your classroom to present a unique lesson about Native American life in the Western United States. Designed to augment classroom lessons about the American West and Native Americans, this program introduces students to Native American traditions, culture, arts and crafts, food, housing, clothing, weapons, tools, and musical instruments, while featuring artwork from the Museum’s collection.
As the discovery box is unpacked, students will handle Native American objects while making important discoveries about the life of Native Americans.

Grades: Appropriate for grades 2-5

Cost:     $50 within Bartow County

COWBOYS AND CATTLE DRIVES

From the end of the American Civil War to the turn of the century about 5 million longhorn cows were rounded up and driven from ranches in Texas to the railheads in Kansas. You and your students can relive this exciting time thorugh a first person presentation by Booth Museum Historian Jim Dunham.
Dressed in authentic clothing, Dunham will take your students back in time when cowboys were king. In his presentation, he will discuss and demonstrate the unique clothing and gear worn by these men on horseback along the cattle trails. Using fancy rope tricks, Dunham will involve some of your students in this program.

PLAINS INDIAN CULTURE

The Native Americans who lived on the Western Plains and followed the migration of the buffalo herds were some of the most interesting and colorful people ever to exist. Dressed in period clothing of a Sioux warrior, Jim Dunham, through a first person presentation will bring the history and culture of the first Americans to life.
Through songs, stories, sign language, and dance, Dunham will lead your students as they discover how this great horse culture flourished on the Western Plains. Your students will explore how these American nomads lived, adapted to their environments, and the important role the buffalo played in their daily lives.

Grades: Appropriate for grades 3-12
